Institut Teknologi Seni Malaysia was established under the Akta Syarikat (1965) by the name of Akademi Seni Melaka and was incorporated on 4 th March 1995. The academy was then registered under the Akta Institut Pendidikan Tinggi Swasta 1996. In the early days, the academy manages the Kumpulan Kebudayaan Briged Seni and also conducted short courses for arts development programs.

On Julai 1996, Akademi Seni Melaka introduced diploma program in the arts related field while on 10 October 1997, the academy changed its name to Institut Teknologi Seni Malaysia with the intention of fully focusing on expanding the diploma program to technology of arts.

In order to meet the vision of Chief Minister of Malacca, the state government then introduced the Institut Seni Malaysia Melaka on February 2001 with the hope of grooming Malacca's own artistic community who are disciplined, polite and also specialized in various types of fields.
